Nolan worked closely with his nephew Christopher Nolan on several projects, including Batman Begins (2005), where he portrayed Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks. He later reprised this role in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), which was co-written by Jonathan Nolan and directed by Christopher. Born in Kent, England, in 1938, Nolan began his career on stage, performing with the Richmond Theatre, the Royal Court Company, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1970, he took on the title role in the miniseries Daniel Deronda, and later appeared in the second season of the sci-fi series Doomwatch. He also played Nick Faunt in all seven episodes of Shabby Tiger.

His film credits include Terror and The World Is Full of Married Men, while his television work spans shows such as Return of the Saint, Crown Court, Enemy at the Door, Masterpiece, Silent Witness, and Dune: Prophecy, which marked his final screen appearance.
