Veteran character actor James Tolkan, best known for his stern, no-nonsense roles in films like Back to the Future and Top Gun, has passed away at the age of 94. He died Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York, according to a family spokesperson.

Tolkan built a long and memorable career playing intense authority figures. He became widely recognized as the strict principal Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy, famously scolding students as “slackers.” In Top Gun, he portrayed the tough commanding officer Tom “Stinger” Jardian, frequently clashing with Tom Cruise’s Maverick over his reckless behavior.

His film career included a wide range of roles. He appeared in Love and Death, directed by Woody Allen, where he played both Napoleon and his double. In Dick Tracy, directed by Warren Beatty, he took on the role of a corrupt accountant working for a crime boss played by Al Pacino.

Tolkan also collaborated multiple times with director Sidney Lumet, appearing in Serpico (1973), Prince of the City (1981), and Family Business (1989), taking on roles ranging from a police officer to a determined district attorney and later a judge.

On stage, he was part of the original Broadway production of Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet, playing the character Dave Moss.

Beyond his most famous roles, Tolkan’s film credits included The Amityville Horror (1979), WarGames (1983), and Masters of the Universe (1987), among others. He also made numerous television appearances on shows such as Miami Vice, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and The Wonder Years.

Born June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan served in the U.S. Navy before studying acting in New York under renowned teachers at The Actors Studio. He began his screen career in 1960 and steadily built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most reliable character actors.

He is survived by his wife, Parmelee, whom he met while working in theater. In his memory, the family has encouraged donations to local animal shelters or rescue organizations.
